As featured on Boromag.com: Buying a men’s shirt off the rack can be quite difficult if you don’t know what to look for. Fortunately, following a few guidelines should help you find a shirt that looks tailor-made.
Fabric: Make sure the fabric is soft to the touch. In general, 100% cotton is superior to any synthetic blends.
Pattern: Look for fresh patterns, such as crisp ginghams and checks. If you’re all plaided out, try interesting new stripes in constructions like oxford cloth and linen blends.
Collar: Try a sleek and narrow collar with 2” collar points made with super soft interlinings for extra comfort. Men with round faces should look for longer collar points – about 2 1/2” or longer will help elongate the face. Spread collars are best suited for narrower faces. Make sure you can fit two fingers in the collar to allow for washing shrinkage.
Body Length: New body lengths should be cut shorter to be worn without a tie. They’re perfect to take you from work well into the evening hours. Popular lengths are 28 1/2”-30”, which gives you the flexibility to leave your shirt untucked over your favorite pair of jeans or chinos.
Fit: Find the shirt that best fits you. Darted backs help shape the sides, providing for a more tailored fit. Make sure it’s not too fitted, though, so that you can sit comfortably without any fabric pulling across your waist. Also, look for shirts with armholes that sit comfortably in your armpits. Higher set armholes provide for easier movement and help maintain consistent sleeve length.
Quality & Make: Look at the needlework. The finer the stitches per inch (length of each thread stitch), the higher the quality.
